Chinese tourists shun Japan and Thailand amid food and crime fears

Travel wishlists for people all over the world can be influenced by locations, food and cultures seen in films and on TV. But sometimes a country’s reputation can turn on a knife edge, as Japan and Thailand have discovered, after falling several places in the estimation of Chinese holidaymakers. Both destinations had enjoyed the highest spots in Chinese vacation wishlists in early 2023. 

Skiing boom persists as China welcomes new snow season

As a cold front grips northern China, bringing temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius in many regions, skiing enthusiasts are rejoicing over the resulting snowfall, eagerly preparing to hit the slopes. The number of ski resorts in China has grown from 200 to over 700 in the span of a decade. 

Chongqing, Thailand to develop new tourism product

Rung Kanjanaviroj, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Chengdu office, shared her insights on the potential collaboration between Chongqing and Thailand. She gave an example of a new kind of overland travel on the new Belt and Road Initiative, which the two parties could work together to build starting from Chongqing and expand to other parts of China, including student exchange and culture exchange. 

Shanghai organizes a bilateral summit in Madrid to boost tourism

Coinciding with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Spanish-Chinese diplomatic relations, the city of Shanghai held a bilateral collaboration summit in Madrid on November 15 with the participation of Turespaña, the city councils of Madrid and Malaga, the Thyssen Museum and representatives of major organizations from both countries. This summit is part of the communication action that the Municipality of Shanghai is developing this year in Europe, “Amazing Shanghai”.

Macau subsidies yield $173 million in hotel, flight bookings

Macau’s tourism authority says a campaign offering hotel discounts to visitors in tour groups from either mainland China or overseas, generated bookings worth RMB 1.1 billion (USD 154.2 million) in the first 10 months of 2023. It resulted in more than 994,000 hotel stays in the period, noted the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) in a Wednesday press release.

Chartered flights for ski tourists announced between Shanghai and Changbai Mountain

Chartered tourist flights between Shanghai and Changbai Mountain in northeast China, a popular domestic ski destination, will be operated from December amid the heated-up winter tourism market. Shanghai Spring Tour announced on Tuesday that three chartered flights would operate daily from December 1 to tap the "sizzling" winter tourism market.

Hainan Tourism: Southern Chinese province boosts tourism exchanges

Relying on a large domestic market, and enjoying on its unique geographical location, China's southern province of Hainan is strategically positioned near China's Hong Kong and Macao, while also connecting with the ASEAN market. As it is establishing itself as an international tourism consumption destination, the tropical island has continuously strengthened its product supply and held rich activities.
